Crittall Windows
Crittall Windows is an Essex-based UK manufacturer of steel window and door systems. The company has undergone a significant transition in its manufacturing processes, moving away from older heavy-duty machinery to modern CNC machining centres to better meet evolving customer requirements for one-off and precision components.
The shift to CNC machining centres brought a significant air quality challenge. Steel profiles require intensive machining with high volumes of coolant, more so than materials like aluminium or PVC, generating substantial oil-laden fumes. The factory began to mist up, creating an unhealthy working environment and depositing excess coolant on steel bar stock prior to welding. Existing paper-type filtration was inadequate for the application and annual air quality checks were reflecting these issues.
Following the installation of Filtermist oil mist filters, the oil mist clouds that had historically filled the factory disappeared. Air quality check results showed measurable improvement year on year. Oil is no longer deposited on employees' clothing, skin, workpieces, or floors. Crittall also achieved economic benefits by recapturing and reusing recycled coolant on flood-based machines, reducing cutting fluid spend. Energy savings were realised through an automated shut-off system that cuts power to each Filtermist unit after ten minutes of machine inactivity.
Production Director Darren Joyce described Filtermist as "a fantastic product that does exactly what it says on the tin."
Following market research and consultation with machinery manufacturers, Crittall selected Filtermist and invested in 12 units, fitted across its entire fleet of CNC machining centres. Machines were also modified to enable the recovered oil to be fed back into flood coolant systems. The installation was completed with minimal disruption to production.
